Fabio Capello's message not lost in translation
Matt Hughes analyses Fabio Capello's press conference before England's friendly with the USA at Wembley. He talks to Ben Smith
What did you make of the decision to make John Terry captain?
It wasn't a surprise. He said he had made the decision before the final in Moscow, which I think he had, and he was always going to give the previous incumbent a go. I think now is as good a time as any.
Terry certainly needs a game, and I think he would rather be playing against the USA than sitting on a beach somewhere thinking about what happened in Moscow.
It was Capello's first press conference in English, how did he do?
He did well, it's a little frustrating for us, but he was reasonably fluent and I think everyone thought he came across well. What he said was pretty clear and it was good to see him having a go.
Do you feel there were signs of the manager's growing influence on the squad?
We haven't really seen any signs on the pitch yet, but you can certainly tell there is a different atmosphere around the camp. If Steve McClaren was still in charge there would have been lots of cry-offs.
But only Michael Owen is missing, and I think that shows the kind of respect he has got from the players and shows that he is not a man to be messed with.
What importance do you feel Capello is placing on the game?
There is no doubt that he sees both of these games as hugely important for the development of his squad. It's not long until the World Cup qualifiers begin and so he wants to start to get the team playing his way.
He gets paid a lot of money and he wants to make a success of this job, so every game is important to him.
