It gives me great pleasure to be together with young friends in a discussion on how mankind should rise up to the challenge in the new century and build a better future.

Here, I want to share with you some of my thoughts on the topic of China’s development, in the hope that it will give you a better understanding of my country.

It is a distinct pleasure for me to join you here at the annual meeting of the China Development Forum. Today happens to be the Spring Equinox, one of the 24 seasonal division points under the traditional Chinese calendar. We Chinese say, “Every minute is as precious as gold on the Spring Equinox, for this is the day when wheat starts to grow.” A forum with the theme of “China and the World Economy: Growth, Restructuring and Cooperation” at such a point in time cannot be more fitting.

This is the preparatory meeting of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). Both procedural and substantive issues will be addressed at this meeting. A fruitful preparatory meeting is essential to the success of the summit. Now, on behalf of the Chinese delegation, I would like to make some comments on the preparatory work of the WSIS.
