Low-frequency waves in space plasmas have been studied for many decades and our knowledge gain has been incremental with several paradigm-changing leaps forward. For the purpose of this conference, we define the range of low-frequency waves to be from 1 mHz to 30 kHz, thus including ULF, ELF, and VLF waves. Low-frequency waves occur in various space plasmas including:
Waves on the Sun (solar atmosphere)
Waves in the solar wind
Waves in planetary magnetospheres (including Earth)
While similar low-frequency waves occur in vastly different plasma regimes, they are analyzed with similar experimental and analytical tools. The goal of wave research is to understand their generation, their propagation, and their interaction with the surrounding plasma. These are common objectives among all ULF/ELF/VLF researchers.
The objective of this conference is to develop a deeper understanding of the fundamental physics of low-frequency waves, including the generation mechanisms and propagation modes, the interaction of the waves with space plasma and energetic particles, and their applications to various areas. To build up a comprehensive picture, this conference will address low-frequency waves in various plasmas. The conference will allow various “wave communities” to stimulate discussions among scientists specializing in different areas of ULF/ELF/VLF research, and identify similarities and differences. |
