会议背景介绍: The 1st International Summer School “Water in Geological Processes” will be held on September 8-13,2014 in Wuhan, China. This series of Summer Schools was initiated by the International University Consortium in Earth Science (IUCES) for young geologists starting their scientific careers in the fascinating field of earth science. The 2014 School is organized by the China University of Geosciences in Wuhan (CUG) and will take place in Wuhan and Zigui county, in the Three Gorges Region of Yangtze River,
The Summer School aims to encourage scientific contacts and collaboration among young scientists and to stimulate the transfer of knowledge from leading scientists to their young colleagues.
PhD students from all 11 member institutions of IUCES and from other institutions are invited to register for this Summer School.
Please join us in 2014 in Wuhan, China!
LOCATIONS
Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province and the political, economic, scientific, technological, cultural and financial center ininland China. The third longest river of the world, the Yangtze River, and its longest branch, the Han River, meet here and divide the city into three parts, Hankou,Hanyang and Wuchang. Thecity covers an area of 8494 km2 and has a population of ca 10 million. The attractiveness of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) is enhanced by the appeal of the city itself.
The county seat of Zigui is situated a few kilometers west of the Three Gorges Dam on the high southern shore of the Yangtze River. The Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric dam that spans the Yangtze River. The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest power station in terms of installed capacity (22,500 MW). In 2012, the amount of electricity the dam generated was similar to the amount generated by the Itaipu Dam.
The Three Gorges Area includes Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge and Xiling Gorge. Zigui is located at the exit of Xiling Gorge, and the joints of the Xiangxi River and Yangtze River.
DATES AND SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
This summer school will last 6 days, including 3 days of short courses at the Lecture Hall of the International Cooperation Office of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) (Sep 8-10), and 3 days of a field trip in Zigui County in the Three Gorges Region (Sep 11-13).
The preliminary list of keynote lecturers is as follows:
Ramon Aravena (Canada), Scott Fendorf (USA), Timothy Kusky (China), Nico Goldscheider (Germany), Shaoyong Jiang (China), and Suzanne O’Reilly (Australia).
The special focus of the year is water in geological processes.
The following topics are addressed in the short course lectures:
Application of Environmental Isotopes in Groundwater Studies Water in Weathering Processes and in the Soil Use of Satellite Images for Groundwater Exploration and Neotectonics. Groundwater in Aquifers with Special Focus on Karst Processes Fluid Evolution and Metallogeny Fluids in the Earth’s Mantle and in Deep Geologic Processes The field trip in the Three Gorges Region includes the demonstration and application of relevant field methods, sampling and monitoring, related to current research activities.
LANGUAGE
English is the official language of the Summer School.
