The Australian Institute of Sport together with Swimming Australia and the John Curtin School of Medical Research, takes great pleasure in hosting the XIIth International Symposium on Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming.
We wish to extend a warm welcome to members of the Steering Committee and to sports scientists, coaches and students alike, and hope you will join us in Canberra at the AIS for what promises to be a wonderfully exciting and informative event.
Canberra, being the Nations Capital, has a multitude of interesting places to see and visit including; Parliament House; National Gallery of Australia; Science and Technology Centre; and the War Memorial. Canberra has many attractive national parks and wildlife to see and visit. Adding an extra day or two to your visit is well worthwhile.
Professor João Paulo Vilas-Boas from the University of Porto in Portugal has agreed to provide the Leon Lewillie Memorial Lecture. Professor J. Paulo Vilas-Boas has a long history with BMS conferences and has agreed to discuss what he knows about BMS and the people who have helped in the development of these conferences. He will talk briefly about the scientific research findings that has assisted in moving the aquatic sports forward and where he sees such research leading us in the future.
We are delighted to announce that Bill Sweetenham will be a Keynote speaker. Bill has served as Head Coach of national swimming teams at 5 Olympic Games for 3 different countries, and has coached swimmers to success at 9 World Championships and 8 Commonwealth Games. Under Bill's management as National Performance Director of British Swimming, Britain's swimmers won 18 World Championship titles, broke more than 200 domestic records and produced their best ever Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Olympic Games results. Bill is internationally recognised for his strategic planning capabilities in high performance sport.
Abstracts are invited to be submitted to BMS2014 in the areas of Biomechanics (including CFD), Medicine/Physiotherapy, Physiology, Strength and Conditioning, Nutrition and Coaching. Details for abstract submissions will be outlined on the Submission page of this website. Keynote oral presentations and poster presentations are included in the conference proceedings.
In addition to the oral presentations there will be practical sessions by AIS Aquatic Testing and Training Unit staff highlighting the applied nature of work conducted at the AIS. Details of these sessions will be posted in coming weeks.
We welcome enquiries from commercial companies associated with equipment used in competitive swimming to exhibit and demonstrate their products as part of the commercial technology display stand.
