研究方向为大地构造学。80年代开始在华南从事多期碰撞造山带研究，90年代以来在内蒙北部从事元古代地质研究和造山带地质填图，1996年后在大别山地区从事碰撞造山带研究，2000年以后研究塔里木板块的Rodinia超大陆裂解事件。曾主持自然科学基金重点项目和973项目二级课题等国家级科研项目多项，发表论著60余篇。曾获香港霍英东基金会青年教师研究基金，地质矿产部优秀图幅奖和北京大学科技成果奖。
教授《盆地分析》、《层序地层学》等研究生课程。
