Biological macromolecules, such as DNA and protein, are the products of billions of years of natural evolution. They are distinguished from synthetic polymers by their defined primary sequences and near-perfect homogeneity (if we do not consider epigenetic modifications), which form the physical basis for a wide scope of life-defining biochemical mechanisms, ranging from the storage of genetic information to protein folding and macromolecular recognition and interaction. By all means, this delicacy and power of nature are still beyond the current capability of chemists. At the Lu Lab, we are dedicated to bridging the worlds of biomacromolecules and synthetic polymers using an integrated, interdisciplinary approach encompassing cutting-edge technologies in organic chemistry, polymers science, cell biology, immunology and biomedicine. We hope to apply our arsenal of scientific knowledge and tools to the understanding of fundamental principles that govern the functions of biological macromolecules and to the development of novel materials that can fulfill a diversity of engineering and medical needs.
Specifically, our research interests span the following domains:
Developing new technologies and methodologies to conveniently synthesize site-specific and structurally well-defined hybrid materials composed of biological macromolecules and synthetic polymers; Creating next-generation synthetic mimics of biological micromolecules that can achieve precise modulation of complex pathways; Developing materials and platforms for various biomedical applications, including RNA therapy and immunotherapy for cancer treatment, vaccines for infectious diseases, etc; Seeking scalable, biomemetic approaches to generate high-molecular-weight polymers with absolute monodispersity and defined sequences. We are actively recruiting members at all levels including graduate students, postdocs, technicians, and undergraduate students. 生物大分子如蛋白质和DNA是上亿年的自然进化的产物。跟人工合成的聚合物/高分子相比,生物大分子的一个显著特征是它们通常都有明确的一级结构,比如单分散的分子量以及确定的单体序列(如果我们不考虑表观遗传修饰)。这样明确的一级结构赋予了生物大分子一系列特殊的性质包括遗传信息的读写和存储,蛋白的折叠,生物分子之间的识别和相互作用等,也是他们复杂而精巧的生物功能的来源。毫无疑问,大自然这种精致的力量仍然是现代化学所不能企及的。 我们实验室致力于通过科学研究来搭建生物大分子与合成高分子这两个不同世界之间的桥梁。我们将运用合成有机化学和高分子化学,生物化学,细胞生物学,免疫学和生物医学等多个学科的基本技术和手段来解答基本的科学问题和原理,并提供新材料以满足重大的实际需求。举例来讲,我们对如下(但不局限于)研究课题特别感兴趣:1) 发展新的合成方法学和技术用于制备新型生物大分子-高分子的复合材料; 2) 通过合成高分子来精确地调控生物大分子功能与活性; 3) 发展可用于各种生物医药用途的新材料和新体系,比如通过RNA干扰疗法或免疫疗法用于癌症的治疗,发展疫苗用于感染疾病; 4) 通过仿生手段寻找可行的途径用于合成单分散和序列可控的人工高分子。 我们正在积极地招收研究生,本科生,博士后和技术员。我们尤其欢迎那些有动力,有决心,有执行力,并且富有合作精神的优秀候选者。如果有兴趣加入我们,欢迎随时通过致信chemhualu@pku.edu.cn 联系我们或者递交申请材料 (申请信和简历)。 我们将始终致力于创造活跃而友好的研究氛围,激励年轻一代的科学工作者们不断地拓展他们的科学热情和领地,帮助他们发展成功的职业道路并获得理想的下一个职位。
