A sworn translator, who is similarly to a notary public, is the holder of an office in public law. Empowered by the state to certify, the translator is specified in his or her professional certificate to the extent. He should grantee the correctness of translations of documents, which are translated by the translator himself or herself, or by another person, the authenticity of copies of such translations and the authenticity of copies of documents, which is translated. Other translation services are also allowed to be provided by he/her.
If a person wants to become a sworn translator, an exam must be taken by him. The Minister of Justice sets the content of the exam. The sworn translator’s examination could be taken by any Chinese citizen, who wants to prove that he has finished academic higher education, and there are no apparent obstacles  which prevent him or her from becoming a sworn translator.
Sworn translators should be evaluated once every five years. To verify the professional skills of a sworn translator is the aim of evaluation.
A person who has passed the examination will be appointed to office by the Minister of Justice, and a professional certificate will be issued to him or her. An oath of office before the Minister of Justice must be taken by the applicant before this happens.
Why choose a sworn translator instead of a notary?
  • Only the signature of a translator can be authenticated by a notary, who meanwhile does not verify the contents of the translation. Differently, a sworn translator not only could certify the authenticity and also could certify the correctness of the translation in terms of its contents.
  • The sworn translator could provide faster service than in a notary's office.
Why choose a sworn translator instead of other translators?
  • Quality –the state have certified the skills and suitability of a sworn translator.
  • Liability – the professional liability of a sworn translator for the damage, which is caused by the sworn translator, has been provided by law.
  • Faster service –after the documents having been translated, the ordinary translation agency usually take the documents to a notary public for authentication. While a sworn translator’s translations could be authenticated personally.
