2.10.5 XML data exchange standards

XML is short for Extensible Markup Language. XML is a set of rule for defining semantic markups, which separates a documents into many components and identify these components. It is also a metalanguage, i.e. a syntax language which defines other languages defining semantic and structured markups related to specific domains.

XML is a concise SGML which integrated rich SGML functions and HTML's usability to Web. XML keeps SGML’s extensibility, which makes XML fundamentally different from HTML. XML is far more powerful than HTML, and no longer a fixed markup language, it allows to define limitless markups to describe data in a document, and also allows nested information structure. HTML is only an common method for Web to display data, whereas XML provides an common approach to directly processing Web data. HTML focuses on description of display format of Web pages, whereas XML focuses on description of contents of Web pages.

XML is used for storage of data. XML is not an alternative to HTML, XML and HTML are two languages of different purposes. XML is designed to describe data which focuses on what is data and how they are stored.

In Internet world, XML are primarily used for two purposes: the first is served as metalanguage for defining various instance markup language standards; and the second is served as a standard exchange language for describing exchange of data.
